Joy Ennang

Joy Ime Ennang is from Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. She is the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operation Officer of Zss Foods. Her business is located in Akwa Ibom State.

Joy ventured into her line of business in 2017. She comes from a culinary background where she was exposed, quite early, to a uniquely hot and aromatic range of peppers, the taste of good oil and how garri can be made to be dry and crispy to stay longer. For these reasons, her basic expectations in foodstuff and spice quality and standards are a bit higher than usual.

Also, shopping for foodstuffs is one of her most enjoyable activities from a young age. When she started schooling at Madonna University she used to transport big bags of foodstuffs from Uyo to Okija which was not a pleasant experience, but she had to do it because she loved shopping for foodstuff in Akwa Ibom and Owerri.

Her love for shopping for foodstuff enabled her to know the different blends of garri prepared and consumed by people in the places she bought her foodstuff from. She discovered that the garri sold in Owerri market is not well-fried so it doesn’t stay fresh for long and turns black after a couple of days while Rivers State Garri is dry but not fortified with palm oil (Vitamin A etc.). However, garri from Akwa Ibom State, where she comes from is fried dry and fortified with palm oil. For this reason, she realized that if she wanted quality Garri, she would get it from home no matter the stress she would encounter transporting it to school.

Furthermore, her passion for shopping for foodstuff also made her discover what traders do in the market. The pepper sellers add colourings and other additives to increase the bulk of their product to make more profit. This makes pepper lose its spiciness/hotness as well as aroma and flavour, and also the additives may pose a threat to people’s health. She further reveals that the palm oil sellers also add strange things to increase the quantity of their oil to make a profit and that was why she used to prefer buying oil from her state which is fresh-from-source and also buying the pepper raw and then blending it herself. This practice made her develop business ideas.

She finally ventured into her line of business in 2017 using the information that she had gathered over the years. Joy affirms that her business is lucrative and one can make money from it and she started her business with a startup capital of two hundred thousand naira (N200,000).

The high point recorded in the business so far is the ability to get her product certified by NAFDAC and HACCP and the low point of the business is the inability to get enough funds to purchase the necessary machines to boost production and also purchase farm produce in large quantity.

Joy agrees that she has thought about giving up in the face of challenges, but when she looks back at how far she has come, and the progress made so far she always has no choice but to look for ways to solve her problem and get back to business.

Her business is duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, FIRS, and SMEDAN and she does not work alone, she has someone in charge of procurement of raw materials, packaging materials and logistics. She also has a certified Food Scientist who supervises the production, distribution and marketing team.

Policymakers and investors can assist Joy with funding to purchase machines, and also purchase raw & packaging materials in large quantities from farmers and manufacturers. She also wants policymakers to provide enabling SME regulations in terms of accessing loans, reduction of taxes, VAT, levies, regulatory agencies fees etc.
