Utibe Akwa is a native of Ikot Obio Akpan in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. She holds a Higher National Diploma in Business Administration and Management from Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic and a Post Graduate Diploma in Economics from the University of Uyo, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
Utibe is a certified Project Manager from the Institute of Project Management (IPMP), and she is a passionate food entrepreneur who is committed to building a locally trusted food brand that ensures healthy living among African households. She is currently the founder of Utytrends Enterprise, the producer of Unik Custard.
Utibe had many reasons why she ventured into her line of business, firstly, she was determined to become a CEO and an employer of labour, secondly, she saw a great possibility of the business succeeding in her state as the line of business was still fresh and untapped in the state, and thirdly, her quest to create indigenous companies that would later launch her state – Akwa Ibom State – to global prominence and entrepreneurial hall of fame.
Utibe affirms that the custard business is lucrative and one can make money from it. She avers “Custard making is a lucrative and viable business that one can venture into. Custard is a meal that is on the breakfast menu in many Nigerian homes so there is a continuous demand for the product. Is a 100% return on investment”.
Utibe started her business with a startup capital of seven hundred naira (N700).
The successes recorded so far in the business are the prominence her product has gained in Akwa Ibom State and beyond and her ability to train over 56,000 youths in skill acquisition across the 31 local government areas in Akwa Ibom and beyond between 2018 and 2023. The low point of the business is the inability to acquire a sealing machine to boost the production of custard.
Talking about giving up in the face of challenges, Utibe says “Like every other human venture laced with hurdles and challenges, my success story was not without hurdles. Mine was the most difficult. But my philosophies of consistency, passion, and resilience were and still are my mix of “staying power”. I acknowledge one of such challenges as start-up capital. There were times I was getting fed up as the demand for my products was getting high by the day, and so many supermarkets and shops were placing orders, I was limited and could not push forward. Even if I had the products, I could not match with the orders that kept coming in, because I was yet to be certified by NAFDAC and SON and other relevant agencies. But I kept pushing”.
According to Utibe, Utytrends Enterprises is fully registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, certified with NAFDAC, and trademarked with the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment. The company is well structured in all areas, ranging from Accounting, Production, Marketing, Corporate Communication and Sales. The business has a staff strength of 15 direct employees and 25 indirect employees who work in various departments. Policymakers and investors can assist Utibe with funds to expand her business, and also help her promote her product.
