The business was founded in 2018. Bolaji further states, “BJ Seaming Fashion is established to intrigue our clients with our fashion pieces while also identifying with the uniqueness in each of our clients, also inspire a new generation of fashion lovers to embrace sustainability and ethical practices and become a driving force for positive change in the industry.

Considering that the fashion design industry is a multi-billion dollar global sector, it has significant economic potential. Through the design and sale of clothing, accessories and other related things, training of prospective fashion designers, people can make money from it.

In the beginning Bolaji’s startup capital was quite modest at just N20,000. This amount covered the purchase of a second-hand sewing machine, which cost N17,000, as well as the essential tools such as scissors, tape rules and a tailor’s ruler. Despite the limited capital, he was able to kickstart his journey in the fashion design business and gradually expanded from there.

Bolaji acknowledges the high points so far, he says, “I’ve been fortunate to experience several significant achievements and high points in my journey. First, I was employed by the management of Twim Institute in Onireke GRA, Jericho, Ibadan, to conduct a training session for their students during a summer holiday. Another highlight was when I received a cheque worth N312,200 for crafting suits for a secondary school in Ibadan. Lastly, I was honoured to be chosen as one of the fashion design Master trainers for the Rural Youth Skill Acquisition program (RYSA). These successes have marked important milestones in my career and have motivated me to continue striving for excellence in the fashion design industry.”

On the low points/failures, he avers:

“Initially, I faced difficulties with managing finances due to inadequate record-keeping, which led to spending all the funds received from clients without proper tracking. This taught me the importance of effective financial management and accurate record-keeping.

I also experienced setbacks by underestimating the time required for the completion of certain clothing orders. This led to delays in delivery and some customer dissatisfaction. However, these experiences have been instrumental in helping me improve my time management skills and better communicate realistic delivery timelines to clients. Overall, these low points have served as opportunities for growth and continuous improvement in my fashion design business.

There have been times when he thought of giving up. Bolaji confirms; “Certainly, there were moments when the challenges in my fashion design business made me contemplate giving up. Balancing the workload on my own, especially when I was the sole contributor, proved to be quite demanding. Additionally, due to my commitment to my academics as a part 5 student at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, I faced limitations in securing an office space.  One particularly challenging period was during my final year exams in 2023 when I had to prioritize my studies overtaking new orders. This situation left me unable to cater to clients’ needs during that time. However, these obstacles taught me resilience and the importance of finding ways to manage my academic responsibilities while maintaining the business.  Despite these hurdles, I’ve managed to persevere and learn how to better navigate such situations, adapting my approach and planning ahead to ensure smoother operations in both my studies and my fashion design business.”

At present, he has transitioned from doing all the work himself to engaging a team of skilled individuals in his fashion design business. He is pleased to share that the business is fully registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, which reflects its legitimacy and commitment.

Bolaji points out Mai Atafo, Yomi Casual and Seyi Vodi as the people he looks up to in business.

Policymakers and investors can contribute significantly to the growth and success of BJ Seaming Fashion business in several ways:

  2. Policymakers can implement training and skill development programs specific to the fashion industry. These initiatives can empower aspiring designers with the necessary skills to thrive in the competitive market.
  3. Improved infrastructure, such as affordable workspace options and modern equipment, can enable me to create high-quality designs efficiently and effectively.
  4. Investors can assist in establishing connections with national and international markets, enabling my business to reach a wider audience and potentially export products.
  5. Policymakers can partner with educational institutions to offer specialized fashion design courses that align with industry demands, equipping aspiring designers with relevant skills.

By addressing these areas, policymakers and investors can play a crucial role in elevating my fashion design business and contributing to the overall growth and development of the industry.

Bolaji takes the opportunity to extend my sincere gratitude to the organizers of this program. According to him, “Your thoughtful questionnaire has allowed me to reflect on my fashion design journey, its challenges, and accomplishments. Your support in providing a platform for sharing experiences and insights is truly appreciated. Thank you for fostering an environment where entrepreneurs like myself can connect, learn, and grow.”
