Kingsley William Eno is from Nsit Ubium Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. He is a farmer who majors in Palm Fruit, Pineapple, Cassava, and Plantain. Kingsley ventured into his line of business in 2017. He had never planned to be a farmer but because of his family’s financial condition, he decided to venture into farming to make ends meet. Kingsley’s father died when he was just 6 years old and two years later, his mother was diagnosed with Arthritis which restricted her movement.

Kingsley was left alone with nobody to cater to him and his mother so he started working in people’s farms and palm oil mills when he came back from school in Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. After working for some time and saving money, he bought chickens and dogs and started rearing them. When his dogs started giving birth, he sold the puppies and also sold eggs and mature chickens. Since his mother was unable to go to the farm, he took care of his mother’s pineapple plantation and cassava farm and when his mother became very ill, he sold everything he had including the farmlands to cater to her medical bills.

He kept on working on people’s farmlands until 2017 when he turned 17, he gathered enough money and rented land for farming. He started by planting pineapples, cassava, and plantain. The pineapple and cassava business is very lucrative in Akamkpa and people come from far and near places to buy them in bulk to retail them in cities.

Kingsley started his business with a startup capital of one hundred thousand naira (N100,000).  He avers that the business requires strength, perseverance, and patience to be successful. He wakes up very early in the morning to go to the farm and returns home late in the evening. He stresses that money is needed to maintain a pineapple and plantain plantation.

The high point recorded in this business so far is his ability to harvest and sell his pineapples and plantain. He also fries garri, makes raw fufu with cassava and sells to people who buy in bulk. Additionally, he has been able to purchase another land to plant palm fruits since the palm oil business is now very lucrative.

Kingsley states that “Farming business has both bad and good sides. There are times deflation sets in especially when a particular farm produce saturates the market and there are times when the harvest is low and you regret planting that season. Also, you can be a victim of thieves who go around harvesting and selling people’s farm produce. However, the good side of the business overshadows the bad side”.

Kingsley agrees that he has thought about giving up in the face of challenges before but he cannot give up because the business provides for his family and pays bills, and it is also from the business that he helps other less privileged people.

Kingsley does not work alone; he engages other people to work with him. His business is yet to be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

Policymakers and investors can assist Kingsley with funds to purchase a motorcycle so he can drive to his farm and also transport his farm produce as the distance to the farm is very far.  He says that he often uses the strength he would have used to work to walk to the farm. Also, he needs funds to work on the new land he purchased. The land is very large and he would not be able to work on it alone.

He appreciates the organizers of this program and also reiterated that his business is very lucrative and also helps other people to be employed or start up their businesses especially those he employs to work on his farm and the people who come from all places to buy in bulk and resell in big cities to make profit.
